Hamrar, scouts outdoor center in Akureyri, started working in 2000 after several years of development. Hamrar is a diverse outdoor recreation and activity area where the emphasis is on environmental issues, tourism and general outdoor activities with the needs of the scouting  movement and the public in mind. Hamrar is a settlement land that was built from the settlement of Helga Magra.



Hamrar's farms are located on the outskirts of Akureyri under a rugged rocky belt that separates Eyrarlandsháls and Súlur from the lowlands at the bottom of Eyjafjörður. Hamrar is in the center of Akureyri's outdoor recreation areas south of Glerár. To the south of Hamrar is Kjarnaskógur and to the north are Nausta and Hamraborgir.

Hamrar is a popular stopover for tourists who make their way to Akureyri. These are both guests who spend the night at the campsite at Hamrar in perfect conditions, other tourists and townspeople who want to enjoy the outdoors in a beautiful environment where there are various possibilities for recreation. In the area there are various playgrounds as well as ponds with the possibility of diverse watersports /recreation activities.

The scouting movement in Akureyri took the initiative and led the preparation and construction of Hamrar  and takes care of all its operations according to the contract with the municipality of Akureyri. Hamrar is one of the two national jamboree locations in the country. At Hamrar the last jamboree was held in 2014 and the first in 2002.
